Intimacy Coordination

In recent years, the growing need for professionalism, safety, and consent in intimate scenes has led to the emergence of intimacy coordination as a crucial part of the entertainment industry (theatre, film, and television). Intimacy coordinators (ICs) are specialists who ensure that all intimate moments—whether physical, emotional, or sexual—are performed with care, respect, and consent, fostering a positive and safe environment for everyone involved; while helping the director to realize their creative vision.
Intimate scenes in storytelling are essential to plot development, character relationships, and emotional depth. However, these scenes come with unique challenges that require careful attention to avoid intentional or unintentional exploitation,
miscommunication, or harm.
By having ICs on set, the entire process of filming or performing intimate scenes becomes more professional by setting clear boundaries, ensuring consent, and providing proper communication, leading to better outcomes for actors, directors, and production teams and ensuring the safety of performers and crew.
There is growing recognition of the need for consent, respect, personal autonomy, and artistic integrity in all creative endeavors. Through the work of ICs, performers are given the tools to feel confident, respected, and empowered while engaging in vulnerable work, allowing them to perform authentically, without compromising their boundaries or
well-being, also enhancing the quality of intimate scenes.

About
INTIMACY COORDINATION
WHAT DOES AN INTIMACY COORDINATOR DO?
- Advocating for performers: Ensuring that actors are not placed in uncomfortable or unsafe situations and that their emotional and physical well-being is prioritized.

- Liaising and negotiating between the actors and production: Coordinating between Production, Direction, and Costume departments to ensure everything is aligned and in place

- Facilitating clear communication and consent between actors: Clear, open conversations around consent and boundaries that make actors feel safe and heard. Confidentiality is maintained and only necessary information is shared with others.

- Ensuring adherence to proper protocols: Intimate scenes require different prep and protocols, including closed sets, flagging off monitors, and adherence to nudity/intimacy riders.

- Choreographing and movement coaching: Just like a fight or dance scene, intimate moments in film or theater need choreography to ensure that every move is intentional, safe, and respectful

but the contact is real.”
